Video Tour of The Old Post Office

Merry Christmas all!

Posting has been a little light on because we haven't had any internet access, beyond the odd bar here and there that allows me to post to Instagram. Anything beyond that will be difficult for a few more weeks. If you use Instagram and are not already following, feel free to search edwinacf for more regular photo updates.

ANYWAY, here's a video tour I took five days ago. It's very shaky and features a slight meltdown from Lucinda. Excuse also my unkempt appearance, I'm sure you can guess at the reasons.

Since I filmed this, Dan has pulled the rest of the kitchen out.

Merry Christmas from the country kitchen of #theoldpostoffice. May your Chrissy lunch be cooked somewhere slightly more hygienic.

Last night, we spent our first night in the house. It was uneventful, even peaceful.

We ordered pizza for dinner and sat on cane chairs under the trees watching the neighbours on their twilight horseride. We then went over and introduced ourselves and had a good chat, getting some of the latest local gossip. It was a lovely way to spend our first evening there.
We live opposite a horse riding school now. Very enjoyable outlook. Things may be looking up.

Lucinda and I are now spending a couple of nights at my in-laws near Brisbane because Dan has headed back to begin the nasty job of stripping the pressed metal ceilings of their peeling lead paint first thing tomorrow.

Once that's done, we can start to get an improvised, table and dresser-style kitchen set up.

Anyway, I hope you're having an excellent Christmas wherever you may be enjoying it. Cheers!

  2. It has great bones, as they say. It will look beautiful, just keep to your vision. Even when you are tired, broke & so sick of makeshift. I come from country NSW and have lived in many farm homes of varying quality (yep, even one that started with a rotting sheeps carcase in the floor of the kitchen). They all turn out fine with a bit a elbow grease and imagination. It was great to "hear" you!. I hope you are keeping the walk in pantry. I use to love this room and now that im all grown up and living in suburban Melbourne, I fondly remember the shelves of preserves in fowlers jars, tubs of flour and oats, home made ginger beer, and jars and jars of jam. You are giving Lucinda many great memories to draw on and this is your greatest gift. Merry Christmas to your family.

    1. Thanks Lynda! We will probably open the pantry to the kitchen but it will give us so much room, we will have plenty of pantry cupboards and space. We shall see!

  4. Wow, you are a legend. When I said room by room walk through I had no idea you would provide video footage! It looks fantastic, great bones and a very unusual layout with that whole section off to the side. Very functional though as you have some space between the bedrooms and the living / kitchen. And even with all that lino ripped out it is looking (and I bet smelling) a million times better. Any chance you will share a floor plan and what you guys are planning to do to the house? And have you thought of a name for her yet? Betsy is thinking such a sprawling old unloved girl might need a name to hasten her makeover. mel x

    1. I aim to please! There is a floor plan up under 'architectural tidbits'. I will certainly share our plans when we finalise them! Just working out how far our budget will get us now and what we need to prioritise. She needs a new roof ASAP, and the whole exterior needs new cladding. Big jobs. A name. The money pit? xx

  6. My goodness what a lot of work you have ahead of you but I can see the potential. What a magnificent house it will be - the bones of it are there and it has dedicated and loving owners so the makeover will be amazing. Thanks for the video - I can "see" more of your plans now. Lucinda is a sweetie too.

  7. Thanks for the tour, it is great to get an idea of what you have to work with, the vj walls are awesome, so strong, (kid proof) they help with soundproofing bedrooms BUT the joins can crack a new paint job, ask around for the best way to overcome this.
When I was sanding and painting cielings, I stood on an old pine kitchen table, covered in newspaper secured with masking tape....big surface to stand and move on, no worries about drips, your cielings maybe too high to do this.
Get the wiring sorted before you start painting, even if you just do a bit at a time.
Hope you had a lovely Christmas and are feeling much better.
It's all improvement from here on !

  8. Great tour edwina.....love the commentary....you sound happy and keen! You have done so much already. Getting those floors up must have been very satisfying. And that pantry is huge!. Soldier on as they say!!....maybe Mrs Pit instead of money pit....bit more dignified. Lucinda sure is cute....I grew up through a similar reno (13 yrs - sure yours won't be that long :)..... It certainly made for great kid adventures and made my brothers and I very resilient .

  9. Well at least I'm not the only one with a horrible original kitchen, and I am certain I have the exact same green bathtub! Otherwise, the house looks lovely and solid and there will be lots of reno stories to come.
